Dr. Saskia Sivananthan

Biography

A data scientist and neuroscientist specializing in dementia Dr. Sivananthan consults with senior health experts from around the world, offering the benefits of years of experience in the field. She has worked with multiple health systems nationally and internationally and was appointed by the federal Minister of Health to the Ministerial Advisory Board on Dementia. She was the former Chief Research Officer of the Alzheimer Society of Canada and Senior Consultant for the WHO where she co-drafted the WHO Global Dementia Action Plan which received unanimous consensus at the World Health Assembly. She lives and works in Toronto, Ontario.

Alexandra Whate

Alexandra Whate is a research scientist and evaluation expert with over 12 years of experience in hospital, academic, and non-profit settings. Alexandra has a diverse portfolio and a demonstrated ability to lead high quality research, evaluation, and knowledge mobilization work.  She is focused on conducting rigorous and meaningful research and to see the evidence successfully implemented into practice, translating new knowledge into health system change. Alexandra holds an MSc in Biomedical Sciences, and an Honours BA in Psychology both from the University of Guelph

Dr. Larry Chambers

Biography

Dr. Chambers is an Emeritus Professor and Director, Research and Scholarship in McMaster University’s Niagara Regional Campus of its Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine. With a focus on health charities, and research institutes, Dr. Chambers dedicates his efforts to enhancing strategic thinking and identifying opportunities for organizational change. He is the author of 18 books, 21 book chapters, and over 185 papers. Dr. Chambers maintains appointments with the Bruyère Research Institute, York University, and ICES. He is recognized as a Fellow with he American College of Epidemiology, the Faculty of Public Health of the United Kingdom, and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

Jennifer Boger

Biography

Jennifer Boger (PhD, PEng) is an international leader in the development of cutting-edge technology for supporting aging, quality of life, and wellbeing. Jennifer has more than 25 years of experience blending state-of-the art knowledge from computer science, engineering, and ethics to create new ways of thinking and doing. Her dual background in academia (Adj. Professor in Systems Engineering, U Waterloo) and industry (Chief Scientific Officer, ESG.AI) enables her to bring innovative ideas to marketable product, with successful projects ranging from SaaS platforms to ambient AI guidance systems. She excels in supporting teams from across sectors and disciplines to collaboratively define, refine, and execute strategies.

Jennifer believes responsible technology development sparks new ways of thinking and doing that can grow market share while avoiding pitfalls. She spearheaded the concept of ‘Ethical by Design’, where her team systematically developed a methodology that enables disparate stakeholders to build subjective aspects such ethics, culture, and citizenship directly into products and systems throughout the product lifecycle. She also co-founded the concept of zero-effort technologies – technologies that operate so intuitively that they require no perceived effort from the people using them.

Jennifer is an Adjunct Professor (Systems Design Engineering, University of Waterloo) and is a Professional Engineer (Ontario). Jennifer has led over 40 academic research projects, authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, given over 50 talks, and served on several international boards. Jennifer’s degrees are in Biological Engineering (BSc, University of Guelph), Biomedical Engineering (MASc, University of Toronto), and Life and Health Sciences (PhD, Ulster University).

Dr. Rose Joudi

Dr. Rose Joudi brings over 15 years of expertise as an Aging and Ethnic Diversity researcher and consultant. Dr. Joudi collaborates with stakeholders to address the unique needs of older adults in diverse populations. She actively promotes educational strategies and facilitates training sessions including elder abuse awareness, ageism, trauma-informed care and cultural competence and compassion when working with diverse populations. She lives, works and plays in Calgary, Alberta.

Dr. Sarah Main

Dr. Sarah Main has over 10 years of experience leading participatory initiatives with diverse collaborators, quality improvement, evaluation, and measurement. Her expertise spans literature searches, environmental scans, patient journey mapping, and program development.   By operationalizing evidence-based caring models and improving provider-patient communication, she helps organizations exceed expectations and elevate care delivery. Her skills in dissemination and implementation drive long-term success and tangible results. Sarah completed her PhD in the Faculty of Health at the University of Waterloo.

Bob Neufeld

Biography

A veteran of the non-profit communications sector, Bob Neufeld has spent much of the past four decades working with Canadian and international non-governmental agencies that support people in need at home and around the world. His previous work experience includes time with the Government of Canada, World Vision International and the Alzheimer Society of Canada. He joined the Brainwell Institute in 2024 and has worked to raise its profile as a trusted source of information on dementia and brain health for journalists across Canada. As a member of a family that’s been affected by dementia, Bob is grateful for the opportunity to support the Brainwell Institute’s efforts to increase public knowledge about living with dementia and the need for better treatment options and support for caregivers.

Alixe Ménard

Alixe Ménard is a PhD candidate in Population Health at the University of Ottawa, specializing in the impact of dementia-related stigma on hospital care quality. Fluent in both French and English, she integrates person-centered decision-making and healthcare strategies into her research, which is dedicated to enhancing the care experience for people living with dementia across the entire care trajectory. Her academic and professional pursuits are deeply rooted in healthcare delivery, palliative care, aging, and dementia care, reflecting her strong commitment to improving outcomes and quality of life for older adults.

Biography

Leo is a new graduate from the University of Waterloo School of Public Health Sciences, where he completed a Master of Science in Public Health Sciences with a focus on health evaluation. For his thesis, Leo investigated the role and responsibilities of care managers who work in home-based healthcare delivery with integrated care management. As a student focused on aging and healthcare delivery, the need to understand issues facing the healthcare system as holistically as possible was apparent, and in his work, Leo strives to utilize multiple-methods research to gain a deeper understanding of issues facing older adults as they receive healthcare.

Phyllis Fehr

Biography

Phyllis Fehr was given a working diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s at 53 years old. She began her career as an ICU nurse before transitioning into dementia advocacy, human rights activism, policy development, research, teaching, and mentorship. Since her diagnosis, Phyllis has dedicated much of her time to anti-stigma efforts and promoting the rights and abilities of people living with dementia at local, national, and international levels.

Her policy work includes serving as a former member of the Ontario Dementia Advisory Board, the Advisory Group for the Ontario Dementia Strategy, and the Early Stage Working Group. She has co-authored multiple research articles and a book and has delivered keynote speeches on the lived experience of dementia, human rights, and anti-stigma education. Phyllis has spoken at the United Nations on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Senate of Canada’s Social Affairs, Science and Technology Committee, and the World Health Organization on non-communicable diseases.

She previously served as a patient advisor to the Alzheimer Society of Canada and is currently a board member of Reimagining Dementia: A Creative Coalition for Justice. She is also an alumna of Dementia Advocacy Canada, where she led the Human Rights Action Team, and Dementia Alliance International. Additionally, she provides local leadership to the Empowering Dementia-Friendly Communities: Hamilton and Haldimand project and is actively engaged in advocacy and community engagement for the Thrive Centre of Excellence.

In recognition of her contributions, Phyllis received the 2023 Alumni of Distinction Award from Mohawk College and was nominated for the 2023 Premier’s Award.

Ron Beleno

Ron Beleno is an experienced family caregiver who looked after his late father with Alzheimer’s for over 10+ years while partnering with his mother during their journey. He actively advocates in the dementia, caregiving, aging, and research communities. Ron is affiliated with AGE-WELL, Canada’s Technology and Aging Network, where he is the Co-Chair of their Older Adult and Caregiver Advisory Committee, and received their honorary fellows award for 2020. He is an advisor, presenter, and coach for numerous groups across Canada, such as Alzheimer and Dementia Societies, Healthcare Excellence Canada, and the Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence. Ron also consults with the innovation community and is an innovator himself, specifically in the areas of aging in place and caregiving.

Fiza Ahmad

Biography

Fiza Ahmad is a graduate of McMaster University, where she earned her Master of Science in Cognitive Science of Language. Her research explores the intersection of language, memory, and rhythm, with a particular focus on how rhythmic priming influences phonological short-term memory during foreign language learning. Fiza brings to Brainwell a strong foundation in experimental linguistics and cognitive neuroscience, as well as a deep commitment to community-focused and equity-driven research. She’s especially interested in how people from different backgrounds experience language and learning, and how we can better support communication across all stages of life. Outside of work, Fiza enjoys knitting and building intricate LEGO sets, which fuel her love for detail and creativity.

Raymond is an alumnus of University of Toronto’s Life Science program, with majors in Human Biology and Neuroscience. His main passion is understanding all perspectives of healthcare in both primary care and healthcare coordination. He is developing his skills to pursue a career in nursing and public health. Bill Tholl

Bill Tholl is a former CEO of the Heart and Stroke Canada (1995-2001), the Canadian Medical Association (2001-2008) and HealthCareCAN (2014-2017). As a former senior official at Health and Welfare Canada (1978-1990), he helped frame the Canada Health Act in 1984. Bill has co-authored two leadership textbooks (Springer: LEADS in a Caring Environment 2014 and 2020) and numerous peer reviewed papers. He has received number awards and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada (2019). He currently serves as an Associate Professor (P/T) at Macmaster University, Faculty of Health Sciences.

Pamela Fralick

Pamela Fralick is a seasoned executive leader with a lifelong commitment to improving Canadians’ health and well-being. Known for her strategic mindset, communication skills, and ability to build consensus, she has held top roles in leading health and advocacy organizations—including President of Innovative Medicines Canada and CEO of the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Healthcare Association, and others.

A compassionate and results-driven leader, Pamela brings expertise in governance, government relations, and organizational excellence, grounded in integrity, inclusion, and fiscal responsibility. She has chaired numerous boards, including CAMH and Outward Bound Canada, and currently serves on boards such as D2R, Queen’s School of Policy Studies, and Outward Bound International.

Muir Gray

Sir Muir Gray began his public health career in Oxford in 1972 after qualifying in medicine in Glasgow. His first project—studying the city’s ageing population—sparked a lifelong focus on healthy ageing.He led NHS efforts in disease prevention and developed national screening programmes. A pioneer in evidence-based practice, he helped launch the Cochrane Collaboration and founded Oxford’s Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine. Gray introduced value-based healthcare to the NHS, publishing key works like the NHS Atlas of Variation. He now leads the Optimal Ageing Programme and the Living Longer Better network. He has received a CBE and knighthood for his services to the NHS.

Charles Alessi

Dr. Charles Alessi is the Chief Clinical Officer at Nightingale Health, a global leader in metabolomics focused on predictive, preventive healthcare. He contributes clinical expertise to integrate this innovative approach into health systems worldwide. He co-founded éditohealth, promoting precision health and lifestyle medicine, and the Radical Health Foundation, a U.S.-based nonprofit. A physician based in London, Dr. Alessi has held senior roles including Global Chief Clinical Officer at HIMSS, advisor to Public Health England, and expert panel member for the WHO on dementia risk reduction. He has supported governments, corporations, and patient organizations in implementing personalized health strategies globally. Currently, he advises the president of IANPHI and holds academic appointments at Anglia Ruskin University in England and the University of Western Ontario in Canada. He also serves on medical tech advisory boards and has published extensively, including co-authoring Increase Your Brainability and Reduce Your Risk of Dementia (Oxford University Press).

Katie Lafferty

Katie Lafferty has thirty years of experience as an executive, entrepreneur, and management consultant. From 2013-2023, Katie served as the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Heart and Stroke Foundation Canadian Partnership for Stroke Recovery, a national research organization that developed a pan-Canadian clinical trial network and training platform in stroke recovery (CanStroke). Prior to this role, Katie served for twelve years as the Executive Director of the Canadian Stroke Network, a federally funded Network of Centres of Excellence whose hallmark initiatives included the Canadian Stroke Strategy (a Canada-wide effort to improve stroke care) and the creation of the Canadian Stroke Congress. Katie is also an entrepreneur, who, together with her husband, founded Watson’s Pharmacy and Compounding Centre in 2006, an award-winning business with two locations in central Ottawa. Prior to 2001, Katie was a Principal Consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Washington D.C. and London, England working with a wide range of public and private sector clients.

Over the course of her career, Katie has served on numerous health and research related committees, provided strategic advice to national health research networks, and chaired multidisciplinary external review panels for organizations such as the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. She currently serves as a strategic advisor to The Praxis Spinal Cord Institute and The Brainwell Institute (focused on dementia). Katie has also served on several Boards of Directors including the Ottawa Art Gallery (current), the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (as Chair), The Ottawa Hospital, the Canadian Public Health Association, the Ontario Stroke Network, CorHealth Ontario, the Maternal, Infant, Child and Youth Research Network, and BioFuelNet.

Katie holds a BSc from Queen’s University and a Master of Science in Industrial Administration from Carnegie Mellon University. In 2010, she was recognized by the Ottawa Business Journal as one of Ottawa’s “Top 40 under 40” for her contributions in the health sector.

Manjula Selvarajah

Ms. Selvarajah is an award-winning journalist, columnist, radio and podcast host, current at CBC and MaRS. In her former role, she was vice president marketing at a Toronto-based tech startup which was acquired by Oracle. She loves talking and learning about the tech ecosystems, start-ups and innovation. She holds an engineering degree from Queen’s University.

He has comprehensive experience in strategy development and implementation, and building new lines of business, as well as a broad range of functions, including business development, finance, human resource management and information technology. Mr. Noel was previously the COO of the Alzheimer Society of Canada and Responsible Gambling Council.

André Halley

André Halley is Chairman of the Board at Organic Medical Growth OMG3 Inc. and serves on the boards of Central America Nickel and IHA Canada Inc. He is also a Senior Advisor to SekurCorp and Incendia Canada Inc.

Previously, Mr. Halley was Chairman of Prevtec Microbia Inc., a biotech animal health company sold to Elanco in 2019. With a 40-year career in telecommunications, he has held leadership roles including Chairman of the Canadian Association for the Internet of Things (CASSIOT) and CEO of Wataniya Telecom Algérie. He has managed telecom operations across fixed telephony, satellite, undersea cables, and wireless networks.

Mr. Halley has also served as CEO of International Advisory Services Ltd in Hong Kong, launched Terra Road Asia Pacific Ltd in 2009, and was Senior Advisor to Qtel. His specialties include international business development in wireless telecommunications and satellite industries.
